Verdun, an ideal location.
The Town of Verdun is the central town in a basin inhabited by 80,000 people who are effectively its customer base. Located in a ’green department’, it is the biggest town in the department (urban area of almost 30,000 inhabitants). A services centre (hospital complex, garrison, education, university units, cultural activities), it has an infrastructure of small and medium-sized enterprises which keeps on expanding from year to year. The food-processing industry (home delivery, farm cooperatives, slaughterhouses, cheese dairies, etc.) and chemistry are its two main industry sectors, alongside more traditional activities like lime kilns and the local speciality, the ’dragée’ sugared almond of Verdun.
There are three industrial areas within Verdun to which we can now add the Souhesmes area, by the A4 motorway on the Verdun interchange. A local government planning project has recently created the "Actipole", an area offering businesses 31 hectares of plots prepared for development.
Tourism, with 500,000 visitors a year, rounds off the local economic network. Verdun, a good stopover when heading for bigger towns like Nancy or Metz, sits close to three borders and is ideally situated at the crossroads of economic activity in the wider region. The future construction of a Meuse TGV (High Speed Train) railway station should strengthen its economic development.
